Page Turning Devices

To turn pages in forScore, you can tap or swipe the screen with your fingers, or you can use a third-party accessory. Page turning devices that work with your iPad or iPhone come in many different forms: foot pedals, handheld remotes, MIDI controllers, standard computer keyboards, and more.

Dedicated Page Turners

There are many page turning devices available currently, some of which are listed on our Extras page. They’re all a little different, so here are a few distinctions to keep in mind when searching for the perfect accessory:

Form Factor

First, you’ll have to decide how you want to turn pages. Foot pedals are most common, but handheld page turners are another great option to consider. Some have a noticeable click when pressed, while others are designed to be silent. Certain models include standard input ports on the back so you can even connect your own pedals, if needed.

Connectivity

Most page turners connect wirelessly using Bluetooth or its newer variant, Bluetooth Smart. Bluetooth Smart is more efficient but isn’t supported on certain older devices like the iPad 2, so you’ll need to make sure you can use them before you take the plunge.

Battery

Some page turners have replaceable batteries, others have built-in rechargable ones, and a few can even be plugged into a USB power source with a cable in a pinch. Replacing batteries is quicker than waiting for a charger to do its thing, but if you remember to top it off before each gig you’ll save some money and hassle.

Virtual Keyboard

Most page turners are a lot like simplified keyboards. In fact, if you connect some of them to your device the system will hide its on-screen virtual keyboard (since it assumes you’ve got a physical one in front of you). Fortunately, most page turners include a way to override this behavior so you can type on screen and still turn pages when you need to.

Other Accessories

forScore also works with most MIDI devices and can be configured to perform a variety of actions, including turning pages, based on incoming signals. With an Apple Pencil 2, you can even use the double-tap gesture to turn pages or activate common features or activities.

With forScore 12 and iOS or iPadOS 14, you can turn pages by moving your head to the left or right while wearing one or both AirPods Pro or AirPods Max. Visit this page to learn more here about requirements and setup.

Customization

forScore’s support for these accessories is wide-ranging and, in most cases, highly customizable. To learn more about this topic, visit our online documentation.
